Approach

Exhibit curated by Research & Development. Site specific installation by JB Daniel using altered ready-made, store bought objects manipulated to various degrees yielding unexpected results. Also large format photographic prints documenting spontaneous and temporal collaborations by Industry of the Ordinary, whose works pose many social and philosophical questions without loss of humor and whit.

'Approach' is an integration of two highly conceptual artist endeavors working today in contemporary art making. JB Daniel and Industry of the Ordinary have a tendency to work outside the traditional exhibition channels, investigating and commenting on the role and importance of art through common everyday materials.

Ai Gallery has handed over the gallery for this exhibit to Research & Development (R&D), an independent curatorial project, unaffiliated with any one gallery, whose aim is to facilitate the exposure of art they find meaningful to an ever growing audience in Chicago. R&D was founded in April 2005 by Matthew Hoffman and Lee Piechocki.

JB Daniel

JB Daniel questions everything, using his art as his method of interrogation, often times of itself. He elevates the idea but never to the detriment of the physical piece, which is always fastidiously crafted in the most discerning way. His work is usually composed of altered ready-made, store bought objects manipulated to various degrees yielding unexpected results.

His most recent work, which will be on display, is from the VINYL series. Daniel explains: 'The process for the VINYL series is fairly straightforward: A visit to the proposed space is arranged, where existing structure is determined and measurements taken. A detailed diagram is then created showing the vinyl surface(s) configured to the existing structure. The total square footage of the installation is indicated. Upon approval of the diagram, surfaces are fabricated and a date is scheduled for the actual installation (which can usually be completed in less than a day). The resulting art is site specific, and makes no distinction between the surface(s) installed and the structure that supports it. 'By installing a highly industrialized product like pre-fabricated vinyl siding in the gallery, Daniel assumes the role of both artist and remodeler. He draws attention to the role of the artist, the gallery, and to art itself.

Industry of the Ordinary

Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) is a super-charged urban art duo composed of Matthew Wilson and Adam Brooks, artists and educators living in Chicago. IOTO was formed in 2003. Their first performance, "Dropping 163 lbs: Daley Plaza" involved approximately 75 performers who dropped 163 lbs of white clothing on Daley Plaza in Chicago. 163 lbs is the average weight of an American adult. IOTO finds opportunity in the monotony and banality of the everyday, flipping it into something extraordinary. Their mission can be best explained in their own words: 'Through sculpture, text, photography, video, sound and performance Industry of the Ordinary are dedicated to an exploration and celebration of the customary, the everyday, and the usual. Their emphasis is on challenging pejorative notions of the ordinary and, in doing so, moving beyond the quotidian.'

Ai Gallery will be showcasing a collection of large format photographic prints from the IOTO archive. These are documentary photographs capturing the often times spontaneous and temporal collaborations IOTO is known for. The works pose many social and philosophical questions without loss of humor and whit.
